A taxi without a driver is coming!

 

Unmanned personal rapid transit system project, will be developed first time in Turkey, for the Ministry of Transportation, 10 billion pounds applicants for R&D support Izmir Institute of Technology, has produced a prototype of the system.

Turkey, yet wanting to have a say in unmanned transport technology in the world, İzmir High Technology Institute (İYTE) prepared a project to develop the first unmanned taxi project and has requested the support of R&D from the Maritime Affairs and Communications Ministry.

Developing the prototype of the system, the university aims to employ unmanned taxis within the normal traffic flow in the campus 3 years later if support is provided.

The project, which was initiated with the proposal of the Department of City and Regional Planning of the Faculty of Architecture, aimed to solve the transportation problems of students in IYTE, which has a large campus area, was expanded with the contribution of companies in Computer, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering departments and Izmir Technology Development Zone within the campus area.

Tofas for the construction of the vehicle, Inci Battery for batteries, TEPAS for engines, Siskon for system equipment and software, firms like Teknokom and Kentkart also emerged as being involved in the project "Turkey's first unmanned Rapid Transit Project" for the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications. An application was made to the R & D support program of the General Directorate of Communications.

3 years, if approved budget of 10 million pounds project envisions the use of IYTE campus of Turkey's first unmanned taxi in 2017.
